Please feel free to enter in any questions along the way through tonight’s discussion!
Jorge Rivera (UICOM-Chicago)
35:43
What platform do you think is best to engage residents/PDs if we have questions about a program? The tried and true email or is social media (like twitter or Instagram) becoming more popular?
JT Tolentino (Miami PD) he/his/him
36:49
@Jorge to engage with PDs - Email still works well. Many programs also have e-mails available for their chiefs to get in contact with.
Matthew Alan Durst
37:08
Do you encourage applicants to "lock down" their social media accounts (Facebook/Twitter/Instagram)?
Mary Catherine Turner, PD Brody SOM at ECU/Vidant Medical Center
37:18
I second that JT
Giovana Jaen
38:06
Hi! Thank you for putting on this session. I have a question about engaging with programs prior to interviews. What is your perspective on the utility of meeting with program directors virtually prior to interview season? What is the best way to use that kind time in a one-on-one meeting, from a PD perspective?
Amanda Whitehouse MS4 UMMS-Baystate
38:07
Can anyone speak to whether we can expect a panel of interviewers? Will it be one on one? Will it be a mix? (Imagine likely a mix).
Lillian Zerihun - MS4, VP&S
38:19
What are some of the ways that programs are brainstorming to virtually engage with applicants and introduce them to the community outside of a traditional interview?
Benjamin Doolittle
38:26
About your social media accounts….. if there is anything unprofessional, then definitely yes. If there is something that you might be uncomfortable sharing with your grandparents, then definitely yes.
Ronald Magliola Metro PD
38:30
I recommend being careful with social media. If you are a bit worried, suggest locking it down.
Benjamin Doolittle
39:02
But for me (Yale), I just don’t check social media accounts…. you gotta have your own life!
Andrew Gaddi
39:10
What aspects of a non-virtual interview do you anticipate to be toughest to discern from a virtual interview?
Jasmine Landry
39:52
We got an email today that we can submit our ERAS as early as 9/1 although programs can't see it until October. Is there any benefit to submitting early?
Mary Catherine Turner, PD Brody SOM at ECU/Vidant Medical Center
40:17
@ Amanda - thinking a panel of residents, one on one with faculty, one on one with a resident
Ronald Magliola Metro PD
40:50
As far being creative with the process, programs are really engaging their residents while reimagining the interview day. Today we were talking about ice breakers for our resident "dinner."
Mary Catherine Turner, PD Brody SOM at ECU/Vidant Medical Center
40:56
@ Jasmine - we cannot see anything until the release date to PDs in October.
Mary Catherine Turner, PD Brody SOM at ECU/Vidant Medical Center
41:53
@ Andrew - the feel for the greater community/town/city will be harder to convey
Ronald Magliola Metro PD
41:55
No benefit to submitting to ERAS early other than to get it done. Programs can not see anything until October 21.
Angela Zhang (she/hers)
42:42
Do you anticipate interviews being one day - that is, the resident pre-interview time being condensed into day-of virtual sessions?
Justin Klucher (UAMS)
43:49
What would be the best way to keep track of school specific webinars? Are there any plans to hold some of those pre-application date?
Max Cruz (NMPRA Pres)
44:24
For residents I'd say there are a lot of us who are very active on social media, and by and large I think completely fine to reach out to us! Whether by DM or tweeting at us questions, we're happy to engage, and can usually pull in other folks we know on social media to help give different perspectives and answers to questions. Obviously as stated previously, keep it professional, but I think definitely a way to reach residents and get some perspective you usually get at that interview dinner/hangout time.

Sindhu Chadalawada
47:27
For an IMG applicant, would program directors prefer to see chair letter from the medicine/pediatric department from their home school or letters from clinicians in the US that we have done a rotation with if available
baileyodonnell
47:36
I see that all the program specific webinar recordings are still not all uploaded to the NMPRA website. Just wondering when they might be uploaded?? Thanks :)
Sasha Kapil
47:46
We’re working on it :)!
Sasha Kapil
48:07
Hopefully in the next couple of weeks! Thanks for being patient with us.
Benjamin Doolittle
48:21
To Jasmine…. your question about submitting ERAS early….. for me, there is little to no benefit…. Most of us will wait for the MSPE (Ie. the “Dean’s Letter) to be released on October 1st before extending interviews for the most part.
Jillian Costello
48:26
Will this session also be recorded/ uploaded? :)
Sasha Kapil
48:32
Yes it will!
JT Tolentino (Miami PD) he/his/him
48:33
@sindhu - it depends on what each program requires for LOR. However, many programs are not specifying LOR, but would recommend physicians that have worked with you.
Alexis (Webmaster, Mt. Sinai PGY-2)
48:46
Here is the link to the past webinars: https://medpeds.org/what-is-med-peds/med-peds-informational-webinar-series/

As Sasha said, we are working on adding the missing recordings! There are also helpful powerpoints at the bottom of this page and the applicant guide page linked above
Mary Catherine Turner, PD Brody SOM at ECU/Vidant Medical Center
50:24
@Sindhu -could be a mix, most important to have letters from physicians who have worked with you and know you clinically
Justin Klucher (UAMS)
50:39
Recommendations for students coming from one region (i.e South East) who are applying to other regions (i.e. Midwest or North east)
Angela Zhang (she/hers)
50:41
Out of curiosity will the interview sign-ups change this year with everything else? I’m thinking specifically of the first-come first-serve model which means that many students fwd emails to pagers, have others sign up for them, etc.
Christy Tsui, OMSIV
51:04
Would anyone mind speaking on how interview slots for Med-Peds are emailed out? Are applicants given a grace period to respond before they “lose” their spot, or are interview days first-come first-serve? I think some other specialties designate certain dates when applicants may expect an interview invitation; is this true for Med-Peds or does it just depend on the program when the emails are sent out? Thank you!
Elizabeth Hayes - HUCM MS4
51:13
Good evening everyone! Do you anticipate that the timing of interviews be different this year for example do you anticipate offering and hosting interviews dates earlier on than you have in the past?
Benjamin Doolittle
52:24
There was a question about folks from international medical schools - department letters vs US -based physicians….. I will say (Yale) that department letters are important…. For the most part, you will need a peds letter and a medicine letter…. These are summative letters. Then have 1-2 US based docs…. Again, just my opinion here.
Allen Friedland
52:38
west coast time will matter and may need to be grouped
Mary Catherine Turner, PD Brody SOM at ECU/Vidant Medical Center
52:57
@ Elizabeth - ERAS opens to us later than before so we will therefore have to start later, but will run later in the season
Ronald Magliola Metro PD
53:21
We anticipate a first-come first-serve model. Suggest letting the residents and attending know that you are anticipating interview requests. Also know that programs will typically only send out the number of interviews that they can handle... basically, with patience, if you were offered an interview the program will do whatever is necessary to get you in.
JT Tolentino (Miami PD) he/his/him
54:20
Many residency programs will use programs such as interview broker and thalamus, or the ERAS scheduler, which allows applicants to sign up for available time slots. Also remember towards the end of the interview season, rescheduling and cancellations are more common, and you may be able to come off of wait lists easily.
Allison Ashford, PD at U of Nebraska
54:22
We will only offer interviews for the number of spots we have— but we hope that people will accept our interview invite in a few days or so.
Dahlia Naman
54:27
I realize this may change depending on how many applicants you interview this season, but how many would you interview in the past per interview day and will it decrease per day this cycle (but possibly have more days)?
Allison Ashford, PD at U of Nebraska
54:47
But our process is rolling and we’ll extend invites throughout the interview season
Mary Catherine Turner, PD Brody SOM at ECU/Vidant Medical Center
54:54
ECU plans to email out invitations but will try to time that to be after main part of your clinical duties and will only extend offers for the number of interview slots we have
JT Tolentino (Miami PD) he/his/him
55:14
Agreed - we only send out applications for the slots that are available at our program.
Upasana Chandra (MS4, Medical College of GA)
57:29
Given the unique nature of this year’s interview season, will geographic region play a stronger or weaker role (if any) in programs deciding to whom they extend interview invitations?
Kali Chiriboga
58:19
Hi, I apologize but my zoom closed and restarted suddenly while I was reading responses regarding people on West Coast time, which wiped the chat prior to reentry. Is there anything else to know other than knowing that west coast interviews will need to be grouped since we are in a different time zone?
Katherine Domenici - UCR MS4
58:46
Are all programs considering grouping us interviewees on the West coast together?
Allen Friedland
59:11
yes no doubt
Ronald Magliola Metro PD
59:26
I think that a lot of programs are being cognizant about Pacific time. We are looking into doing afternoon interviews... not necessary only for west coast people, but just to have options.
Maya Mahendran
59:29
When are programs planning on beginning to send out interview invites?
Kali Chiriboga
59:33
Thank you!
Benjamin Doolittle
01:00:25
Invitations tend to be rolling, but invitations will start coming out soon after October 1st.
Lawrence Rolle
01:00:27
is there a such thing as residency negotiation? as in programs having flexibility for their curriculum depending on applicants career goals? for example i know I would like to be involved with medical school leadership or hospital admin in my career. are these things that we can ask about in an interview or is this pre-interview conversation?
Allison Ashford, PD at U of Nebraska
01:00:51
@Maya I would plan on some places sending out invites the day ERAS opens for programs (10/21)
Phil Jurasinski
01:01:31
I'm not sure if this was answered or mentioned before, but are all the med/peds programs using the same video platform (e.g. Zoom) for their interviews? Thank you!
Clare Martin
01:01:38
How can we learn more about the communities of programs and sites where we will be training?
JT Tolentino (Miami PD) he/his/him
01:01:41
@Phil - most likely, yes
Max Cruz (NMPRA Pres)
01:01:50
you can absolutely ask about that in an interview. things that you are interested in or passionate about, definitely make sure to ask how that program can make you better, what mentors they have for you in that area, etc!
Allison Ashford, PD at U of Nebraska
01:02:01
@Lawrence: some programs have “tracks” (ie, international medicine, academics, etc); all med Peds Programs try to direct your residency and your rotations towards your career goals.
Mary Catherine Turner, PD Brody SOM at ECU/Vidant Medical Center
01:02:10
@ Maya - but other programs will take some time since we need to do that holistic review of your application. I anticipate it will take a week before we send out our invites
JT Tolentino (Miami PD) he/his/him
01:02:19
@Lawerenc e- most med-peds programs have flexibility to tailor your residency program based upon your career goals. You can definitely ask those types of questions during the interview day.
Benjamin Doolittle
01:02:26
Hi Lawrence…. this is a great question…. every program will have different experiences….. at yale there are various electives, tracks, and experiences.
Tori Alexander, MS4 OSUCOM
01:02:32
On the topic of program-specific Webinars… would it be possible for those to be recorded as well? Whether we can make the original time or not, it’s always helpful to be able to go back! :)
Lawrence Rolle
01:03:30

Mary Catherine Turner, PD Brody SOM at ECU/Vidant Medical Center
01:05:08

Matthew Alan Durst
01:05:09
thanks so much everyone!
Upasana Chandra (MS4, Medical College of GA)
01:07:16

Charlie Oertli, MS4- Creighton University
01:07:24
Can’t be as bad as Minnesota winters :)
Kali Chiriboga
01:07:33
To follow up on the regional question, for those of us located far from many programs (PNW), often we are asked to make sure we express interest in the specific region we are applying to. How would you recommend doing that in an ethical way, to help make sure it is not our region that is the factor which precludes us from receiving an interview invitation, given that programs may increase regional focus?
Jennifer Tich
01:07:49
Hey now! MN native here! We can handle anything lol
Allison Ashford, PD at U of Nebraska
01:08:51
Good point Allen!
