For med peds hospitalists, do they have to do the peds hospitalist fellowship as well or can they treat inpatient peds patient after 4 years of residency?

Ronald Magliola MetroHealth PD
36:26
There is a pediatric hospital fellowship of 2 years, but the vast majority of med-peds graduates who wish to do pediatric hospital medicine have not done this training -- somewhat because it is officially only in a pilot phase.
Ronald Magliola MetroHealth PD
37:49
The October 21st date is delayed this year to assist students with completing their application.
JT Tolentino (Miami MP PD)
38:28
For those who are interested in fellowship training and academic training, there are a few Med-Peds hopitalist fellows.
Katie Diamond-Falk
39:41
For MP hospitalist the first round of peds boards was just this past fall (2019). For those of you entering residency if you want to take PHM boards you will need to do fellowship. However, it will really depend on where you want to practice if the hospital will require/want PHM board certification for peds hospitalists.

Currently with only 1 Peds hospital Board certification given, there will remain a gap for "supply vs demand". Will depend on hospital system, rural vs city or academic setting.

this year for aways is very difficult as many intuitions are not allowing learners. I would suggest reaching out to institutions on your list and reach out to see if you can talk to residents and get a feel for the program
Stef Brown (Miami MP section chief)/MPPDA member rep)
47:34
Some institutions are offering "virtual rotations" for MedPeds. I would suggest you talk to as many folks as you can who are MedPeds.
Laura Workman (PD University of Louisville)

what are the chances of matching for an IMG into a medpeds residency.....
Katy Snyder - MS4 IUSM
50:00
So there isn’t any advantage to submitting on Sep 1st this year - do I have that correct?
JT Tolentino (Miami MP PD)
50:23
That is correct. We can’t see anything until Oct 21st.
Katy Snyder - MS4 IUSM
50:31
Awesome! Thanks for clarifying that!
Tom Davis (Geisinger PD)
50:52
taking your time to complete it over time is always better than waiting. there is always a delay in pd getting to see anything until 10/21. its your time to make it perfect
Ryan Smith
51:24
So should I still email the program directors and let them know of my new letter even if I submit it on Oct 19th?
Tom Davis (Geisinger PD)
51:40
no need to if it is before 10/21
Ryan Smith
51:45
Thank you!
Katie Diamond-Falk
52:22
If you are a strong applicant (grades, experiences, step scores, rotation types, etc.) IMG applicants definitely match into Med-Peds. It may be reasonable to apply to more than 10-15 programs even if you are otherwise a strong applicant especially if you are unable to visit/interview in person this year.
Tom Davis (Geisinger PD)

Also…. best to get letters from people who actually know you rather than super famous people who may not. I’d rather have a heartfelt letter from a junior attending rather than a bland letter from a nobel laureate ….. just my opinion.

54:12
We had a couple of questions about shifting interview season. I would say that the season will be compacted... that is, the season will start late, but programs will try to interview the same number in a shorter amount of time. So we will likely go from a 16 week interview season to a 10 week intervie season.
Brant Cornelius (OMS4)
54:13
How many med/peds programs would you recommend applying to, especially since interviews will be virtual this year? Thanks!
Katie Diamond-Falk
54:22
I will say for social media there are restrictions for some programs by their hospital. We are extremely limited at Maine Medical Center for example
Stef Brown (Miami MP section chief)/MPPDA member rep)
54:26
On Oct 21 when we open eras, the default is all applicants in alphabetical order. As you upload new things they add to your application automatically
JT Tolentino (Miami MP PD)
54:51
For programs not in your region - you can still reach out to programs in regions you are interested in.
Ronald Magliola MetroHealth PD
55:22
There was a question about how many programs to apply to. My recommendation is to review your packet with any one of the program directors. They will be able to review your application and give you great advice.
Suzanne McLaughlin, Brown PD
55:41
I think we'll all be figuring this out - and reaching out to residents and to the NMPRA connections you make to hear not just about their impressions of the programs they matched to - but can also ask what their experiences were elsewhere.
Jayne Barr AAP Section MedPeds
55:42
I have always advised 10-15 depending on strength of the application and the regions you are interested in applying to
Ronald Magliola MetroHealth PD
56:04
For someone who does not have any "red flags" on their application, the chance of matching is virtually 100% when ranking 10 med-peds programs in a row.
smjohnson21
56:25
I know that there are recommended limitations in terms of applications that we should send out, are there any hard rules that we should follow?
Lauren Carpenter
56:49
Are programs considering interviewing more applicants this cycle than in previous cycles? I would think that applicants may be more likely to hold interviews they may otherwise cancel since they will not involve travel
Ronald Magliola MetroHealth PD
56:50
That should be very encouraging! But, I'd suggesting having a program director review and give you great advice. We are here to help!
Shea Nagle
57:10
How will PDs be weighing standardized tests this year given that Step 1 is going P/F soon and applicants will have variability in whether they have Step 2 CK/CS scores? Would love to hear your takes on that.
JT Tolentino (Miami MP PD)
57:40
In terms of limiting applications - it would be best to consider working with a PD or a MP mentor to determine number of applications.
Joshua L. Morris (MS 4 Dell Med)
57:55
How do we pick a program to reach out to help review a Med-Peds application? My school doesn’t have a MP program but we do have LOTS of Med-Peds faculty
Ronald Magliola MetroHealth PD
58:16
Lauren, I think that all of the programs are really exploring the numbers, but in reality there are probably the same number of applicants this year for the same number of positions. Truly, we will be OK especially if we just stick with what has worked in the past.
Suzanne McLaughlin, Brown PD
58:38
Strongly encourage you to reach out to local faculty for initial input, but also they may connect you wtih their former PDs for added input
Benjamin Doolittle
58:39
My opinion here: I am minimizing step 1 scores and taking a more holistic approach to figure out interviews…. And yes, I’ll be interviewing more applicants this year.
Stef Brown (Miami MP section chief)/MPPDA member rep)
58:43
That 100% chance is dependent on the competitiveness of the programs you apply to and your own individual competitiveness. Reviewing your application with a MP PD and having that discussion ca be very helpful.
JT Tolentino (Miami MP PD)
58:44
Recommend connecting with the faculty.

Someone asked about In-region…this will really depend on each program. We are unlikely to be able to interview even our Tufts students who are rotating with us in person based on our institutional guidelines. Most programs will be doing virtual interviews. So I think regional will matter less.

National organizations are recommending that programs approach recruitment with ALL virtual interviews- including applying this consistently to local applicants as well as out-of-state -- there is potential for this to be a more equitable process in that sense.

01:19:33
Most of the programs have a coordinator listed and I'd suggest that most program directors have told their coordinators to support the connections with students.
Austin Ritter (LECOM, M4)
01:19:47
It would be great to hear more about expectations/value around visiting student electives and acting internships. My core rotation site is an 80 bed rural community hospital with no residency program, so I was previously planning to rely heavily on my fourth year elective to gain exposure to how academic medical centers function.

For people who are considering dual-applying to med-peds and another speciality, how does that affect our evaluation by PDs. I’ve heard some students who did not “reveal” this in an interview and others that have. Thanks!

Do you anticipate interview/application limits due to the accessibility of virtual interviews? I think EMRA today released a statement today about a 17 or so limit

Many program directors recognize that many of our applicants dual apply. I personally would not offer that information unless asked (and it is rarely asked) because we understand that there are many reasons to dual apply... geography is one of the big ones.
Stef Brown (Miami MP section chief)/MPPDA member rep)
01:23:20
With regards to dual applying, we all realize it is sometimes comforting if you are limited by region.
Suzanne McLaughlin, Brown PD
01:23:29
I have amazing advisees and residents who have interviewed in both MedPeds and categorical - often because they are still exploring with fourth year experiences, and/or they are working with geographic or couples-matching restrictions - and for them, it makes sense. I favor being open and clear on reasons. We value someone who is giving careful thought to their priorities and goals.

only word of advice would be be careful applying to multiple programs at the same institute. many pds talk across programs in the same site. we understand that many are applying to categorical. please make sure you send the right personal statement as well

In the past I encouraged students to reveal if dual applying given that they may run into someone from the other program on their other interview day and that is always awkward and makes me question someones professionalism/ability to manage uncomfortable situations. For me it I would rather know that someone has also applied to a categorical program and have them tell me why they applied to both (family in the area, etc.) and explain their dedication to MP.

01:27:05
For folks couple matching who are pretty set on MedPeds would you still recommend dual applying as a safety measure? Ideally I only want to apply MedPeds, but I want to make sure I can do residency at least in the same city as my wife
JT Tolentino (Miami MP PD)
01:27:28
In those situations like couples matching or needing to be in a particular location, it may be to your advantage.
Tom Davis (Geisinger PD)
01:27:59
I would not. I would go all in on mp
Stef Brown (Miami MP section chief)/MPPDA member rep)

It also depends on your partner's specialty. For example, there may be 5 IM programs in the same city as 1 MP program.

For couples matching or other restrictions for family/geography/otherwise, you can start with perhaps a broader set of applications and use the options for interview offers as a first and reasonable sense of whether you'll have sufficient options.

Will caution if you apply broadly and then find yourself able to narrow - in decency to programs and to other applicants, do try to make programs aware when you decide NOT to interview as well - it reflects professionalism and consideration for your peers.
