Hello! In the last session the PDs mentioned applying broadly across the country is encouraged. Is it recommended to write specific personal statements explaining an interest or connection to a region in order to be considered for interviews?
Elizabeth Hayes - HUCM MS4
50:44
good evening everyone! What is a common error/mistake that you have seen from applicants in the past and would advice future applicants not to do?
Julia Black
50:54
What is the best way to explain dual applying?
Hayley Sharma
50:55
For someone who is applying outside of the region and perhaps haven’t been to that particular city, what are some good ways to get to know the city?
Gill Garver
51:01
What types of community outreach/service projects do your programs get involved with in your respective cities?
Andrea Silvas
51:04
I can't unmute myself
Clare Idehen
51:04
What ways does your residency program plan to mitigate in-person interactions with faculty and residents during interviews? Will there be virtual mixers, supplemental essays for applications? Optional in-person tours?
Angela Zhang (She/hers)
51:07
I’d love to hear about anti-racist initiatives, such as curricula to counter race-based medicine for your residents, or structural ED&I efforts that mitigate the minority tax?
Michael Gonzalez UICOM
51:15
Do any of your programs with exposure to gender clinics?
Pranati Panuganti
52:27
Is there a formal way that residents are mentored, assessed, and given feedback?

Jheison Giraldo
53:13
any advice for people who are couples matching?
srkapil@iu.edu
53:29
or message any of the program directors that have provided their emails on this thread!
Max Cruz
53:31
^!!! (and getting set up with a mentor does NOT commit you, even if you're still trying to decide it's very helpful to talk to folks who can give you good and accurate advice!)
srkapil@iu.edu
54:12
Second what Max said! We all just want you to find the MP program that’s best for you! You can’t go wrong!
Amanda Kaley
54:35
In reference to Hopkins program, if someone realizes during their training that they may want to sub-specialize, how does that work? (Re: the person who ended up pursuing palliative care)
Adriana Lara
55:06
Are any of your programs IMG friendly ?
Jessica Gonzalez (M4, FSUCOM)
55:35
Hi everyone! With the recent surge of Covid and our USMLEs being cancelled/moved, will your program interview students without CK scores? Thank you so much for being here and telling us about your amazing programs!
Adaola Onyenaka
56:05
Good evening and thank you for your time! Are any of your program currently offering visual clerkship/shadowing opportunities for students who would like to interact with residents and program directors?
Brittany Brown, CUSOM OMS4
56:08
Do any of your programs take the COMLEX in lieu of the USMLE?
Mike Contarino
57:12
we will make time during the interview for the applicants to spend time with our residents.
Charlie Oertli MS4, Creighton
57:42
Do you have any tips for how we can get a feel for the culture and patient population of the city we will be training at without being able to travel there?
Ernest Ekezie
58:17
thanks all for your time.....will applications turned in later than Oct21 be visited and evaluated equally?
Rachelle Gonzales - M3 EVMS
59:49
Similar to Jessica's question but slight difference: with the recent surge of COVID, will programs take this into account when reviewing applicants who took Step 1/2 during the pandemic? I have heard that the stress of the pandemic may have affected how students have tested during the pandemic
Rachelle Gonzales - M3 EVMS
01:00:46
I realize we are more than a test score, but hard to deny the importance of these exams!
Ron Magliola MetroHealth PD
01:00:52
We are all struggling with the best ways to showcase the vibe of the cities... I think the best way to get a feel for the culture of the city is to really connect with a couple of residents during and after the interview days. Hopefully you can vicariously find your people. I also suggest getting on virtual forums to talk to students who come from different cities.
Mike Contarino
01:02:01
At unc we have faculty development for identity, implicit bias and other improvements. It's everyone's job and we take it seriously. Many of us are part of the work done in the medical school as well, with the dept of social medicine. We have diversity officers at every level in the organization now. And I have a grant for URM retention and support for our residents. We collaborate with ECU, Duke, Morehouse, and Wake Forest.
Ron Magliola MetroHealth PD
01:02:20
All programs are well aware of how COVID is causing delays in the taking and processing of USMLE and COMLEX. Programs are very well committed to doing holistic reviews and to dive down deeply into our applicants.
Allen Friedland (Christiana Care PD)
01:03:17
A lot depends on whether medical schools relax the requirement for CS or CK to graduate
Anu Goel (arg2015@med.cornell.edu)
01:04:33
My school announced today they won’t be including an adjective on our MSPE this year. Is this in line with what other institutions are doing, and will this come as a surprise to PDs?
Megan Harris
01:06:16
And any specific or different advice for those partners both couples matching into med-peds?
Tim Brady Indiana PD
01:06:37
Many schools no longer use class ranking or descriptive adjectives. That definitely is the trend.
Ross Gilbert, U of Wisconsin
01:06:43
Can you speak briefly to the family-friendliness culture of Med-Peds in general? Or your programs specifically?
Ross Gilbert, U of Wisconsin
01:07:34
^^Regarding residents who are parents to young children, to be more specific.
Allen Friedland (Christiana Care PD)
01:07:53
Send us the advisors, clerkships, deans and mentors that need to be trained about med-peds data and med-peds programs so we can design a second webinar just for them
Angela Orozco | Johns Hopkins
01:08:28
@Ross Gilbert - I had two children during residency and felt fully supported! I think being at a place with larger categorical programs - you will have greater flexibility as things come. I also lost my grandfather during residency and had full coverage to fly across the country for that.
Mike Contarino
01:09:08
MED PEDS = FAMILY FRIENDLY!!
Ron Magliola MetroHealth PD
01:09:24
Agree with Allen... We will have another session for your deans, advisors and mentors. We want to train them to be the best possible advisors. Please send their contact information.
Ross Gilbert, U of Wisconsin
01:10:42
Thanks everybody, for your thoughts!
Max Cruz
01:12:30
So awesome!
Mike Contarino
01:14:32
At least this is recorded.....
Ron Magliola MetroHealth PD
01:14:41
Hahaha... we can take that part out of the recording. But I agree with Lenny!
Max Cruz
01:14:49
LOL
Andrea Silvas
01:15:02
THANK YOU FOR THE HONESTY!!
Max Cruz
01:16:57
I will say one thing MP has in its favor, esp if you are looking to subspecialize, is that 4y versus 3y is a world of difference- you'll see your categorical coresidents having to get right into research and really have to get their ducks in a row for applying just 2 years in, and I feel as MP you can almost spend intern year a bit more focused on just soaking up all your rotations without feeling as much of the pressure/time crunch
Monica Mix
01:18:13
In regards to the earlier question posed to our program at Hopkins about sub-specialty training - we hope that people are committed to Urban Health primary care when they match with us, but we understand that sincere interest can still change during residency. Our goal is to support people if that happens.
Max Cruz

Mike Contarino
01:21:34
Agree with reaching out and talking to the residents at the places you interview. What are your interests? Can you do them there?
Max Cruz (NMPRA pres)
01:22:11
Feel free to reach out to residents (can ask us via info@medpeds.org to get put into contact if needed)- residents tend to be very honest with you!
Angela Orozco | Johns Hopkins
01:22:27
I always encourage being honest about how you recharge - whether it's running, hiking, dance, painting, foodie-searching - think of what recharges you and also look to see if it'll be available in those sites.
Ron Magliola MetroHealth PD
01:23:11
There are fun activities to do everywhere. With the camaraderie of residency, you will have a great time just about everywhere. You can make any city work for you and enjoy it!
Mike Contarino
01:23:59
Or non city! (We have cities too, Durham, Raleigh, etc- just smaller).
Ernest Ekezie
