Allison Ashford/ PD U of Nebraska

Hot tip: remember that everyone in our programs is important, and treat them all with kindness and grace. Sometimes we’ll have someone that was unkind to our coordinator— and that gets back to us!
Sharon Wretzel (she/her) - Baystate Medical Center
53:55
Yes Allison - absolutely! Completely agree
JT Tolentino - U Miami PD (he/his/him)
54:07
@Allison agreed!
Allison Ashford/ PD U of Nebraska
55:09
Re post-interview communication: I don’t expect anything from you after we meet on interview day, and likewise, don’t expect anything from me. I will have all the info I need to make my list after our interview, and I don’t want to make your decision any harder than it already is.
Sharon Wretzel (she/her) - Baystate Medical Center
55:58
We are similar - we do not contact applicants after interview day, but welcome all questions to anyone in the program (program leadership, residents, faculty)
Stephanie Cedeno - NMPRA Secretary, Miami PGY-2
59:10
Hand-talking is the ENERGY we love!

59:47
One of the joys of Med-Peds is finding so many kindred spirits all over the country who miraculously love and are passionate about many of the same things you are. You just won't know till you bring it up.
JT Tolentino - U Miami PD (he/his/him)
59:55
Please ask questions if there are any!
Max Deng (he/him/his)
01:00:21
What’s the best way to ask about the relationship between the M-P program and the categorical programs during an interview
Sharon Wretzel (she/her) - Baystate Medical Center
01:00:51
Please do not apply to all 78 programs; please apply to the right programs. We are all happy to discuss with people who don’t have med-peds programs at their schools to help guide decisions and walk people through the process.
Allison Ashford/ PD U of Nebraska
01:01:43
@Max: I think you can ask it just like that! How integrated the med/peds residents are, do they have the same/similar opportunities, are med/peds residents included in categorical committees and/or asked to be categorical chiefs. . .
JT Tolentino - U Miami PD (he/his/him)
01:01:54
@Max I think asking how the MP residents and the MP faculty are integrated into the categorial residency programs, including faculty involvement in curricula and teaching, how they are integrated into program meetings, etc, may give an idea of the relationship between the programs.
Khadijah Hussain
01:02:06
What is an appropriate timeline for pre-interview communication to let a program know we’re interested or have a particular draw to their program? Shortly after submitting ERAS, or should we wait a little longer?
Allison Ashford/ PD U of Nebraska
01:02:09
@JT and I share a brain.
Sharon Wretzel (she/her) - Baystate Medical Center
01:02:14
Max - this is a really common question I get asked. You should also ask the residents at the program too
JT Tolentino - U Miami PD (he/his/him)
01:02:20
@Allison great minds think alike!
Elizabeth Hernandez
01:04:45
This is more in regards to the ERAS application itself rather than actual interviewing, but what is the advice on community service events/projects under 1 organization. Should we just do 1 experience under the org name and then write about all the projects in that description box or use different experience boxes with the same org name? What is easier to read through? Is there a preference?
Khadijah Hussain
01:05:50
Thank you!
Sarah DeJulio
01:06:40
Regarding personal statements, is the focus on why we want to do med-peds? I’m sorry if this has been asked before bu there is so much advice from different places!
Allison Ashford/ PD U of Nebraska
01:06:59
@Khadijah: I think also it’s important to remember that the interview season extends into January. Often people start canceling towards the end of the interview season, so make sure to remember an invite could sneak in late in the season as spots open up
Steph Lee- NMPRA, Miami PGY2
01:07:55
I was involved in an organization from undergrad through end of medical school and held multiple leadership roles throughout the 8 year time. I lumped it all into one entry and just made sure the formatting looked tidy, just so someone knew how long I was involved.
Elizabeth Hernandez
01:08:09
Thanks!!
Jaimie Rogner | SUNY Upstate | MSIV
01:08:57
If we took part in unique electives throughout our time in medical school that were important to us, is it okay to add them as an "experience" to provide further detail, or would you recommend not doing so since they will already be on our transcript?
Micaela Witte
01:09:25
Do you have a preference on chair letters versus individual letters? I worked with a chair and had him write both an individual letter and chair letter, but am not sure which is best to include
Didi Okorozo
01:09:49
When do interview invites start going out and when do they stop? How long do interview days last? Thank you!
Sharon Wretzel (she/her) - Baystate Medical Center
01:10:46
Micaela, each of us will feel differently about the chair/individual letters. Program websites should have information about which they prefer.
Khadijah Hussain
01:11:12
What are your preferences on including activities/experiences from undergrad or even high school?
Micaela Witte
01:11:25
Thank you!
Allison Ashford/ PD U of Nebraska
01:11:27
@Jaimie: personally (others may disagree), I would rather your classes/rotations stay on your transcript and not as an “experience”
Jaimie Rogner | SUNY Upstate | MSIV
01:11:43
@Allison, thank you so much for your response!
J. Steven Ekman
01:11:45
What is your take on someone who applies to both Med-Peds and also to categorical Peds because they like the institution?
Allison Ashford/ PD U of Nebraska
01:12:16
Weird. JT and I agree.
Jaimie Rogner | SUNY Upstate | MSIV
01:12:40
Thank you so much, I suppose I meant more so electives that ran concurrently in first and second year, such as a "rural medicine" program at my school
Jennifer O'Toole (she/her) - PD U Cincinnati
01:12:54
@Micaela - I agree with Sharon. We all have different requirements for letters, so please check our websites!
Allison Ashford/ PD U of Nebraska
01:13:02
@Didi: theoretically you could get an invite on 9/29 when we (PDs) open ERAS. And most of us will be interviewing through January…so I suppose you could get an invite late-ish too.
JT Tolentino - U Miami PD (he/his/him)
01:13:23
Alison and I have have the same thoughts…..
Jaimie Rogner | SUNY Upstate | MSIV
01:13:25
I appreciate your replies!
Allison Ashford/ PD U of Nebraska
01:13:31
But most of us will take some time to review applications, so expect a bump in invites within those first two weeks as we read the ENTIRE application
Sarah DeJulio
01:13:42
Eras - bullet vs. paragraph on experiences?
Linnea Vance, MS4
01:14:07
How much emphasis is put on geographical connection to the locations of your programs?
JT Tolentino - U Miami PD (he/his/him)
01:14:13
Bullets or paragraphs
JT Tolentino - U Miami PD (he/his/him)
01:14:17
Either is fine.
Sarah DeJulio
01:14:26
Thank you1
Sarah DeJulio

Max Deng (he/him/his)
01:14:31
What order do you all receive the apps in?
Jennifer O'Toole (she/her) - PD U Cincinnati
01:14:34
@Sarah - Bullets with clearly and cleanly defined info is my preference.
Sharon Wretzel (she/her) - Baystate Medical Center
01:14:39
@Linnea - not much, I think that this is different for each program but we love our applicants from all over the country
Didi Okorozo
01:15:02
Thank you Dr. Ashford.
Sharon Wretzel (she/her) - Baystate Medical Center
01:15:25
@Max, they all come in a group. There is no order if you have the entire application complete by 9/29.
JT Tolentino - U Miami PD (he/his/him)
01:15:41
New applications appear to us as they come to us.
Jennifer O'Toole (she/her) - PD U Cincinnati
01:15:42
@Max - An onslaught! :-) Though honestly, we can set different filters (alphabetical, school, etc) and we use those filters to review apps. Everyone has their own style.
Max Deng (he/him/his)
01:15:47
Thanks just wanted to quadruple check :)
Mike Aylward (he/him) U of MN PD
01:15:52
We see applications based on however we set up our filters in ERAS.
Allison Ashford/ PD U of Nebraska
01:16:15
Sometimes I wish their was a “shuffle” function in ERAS!
Allison Ashford/ PD U of Nebraska
01:17:17
*there. Dang it.
